Summary
Cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis or aneurysm are leading causes of mortality in developed countries. Mostly they are diagnosed after specialized examination for which however the patient needs to be identified first. Global state of the vascular system can be assessed for instance by so called ankle brachial pulse wave velocity at these days. However this method is not sufficiently sensitive to identify specific pathologies. Therefore the first aim of this project is identification of changes in pulse wave shape due to presence of chosen pathologies (aneurysm or stenosis) using experimental and numerical models. Once the particular pathology is identified it is critical to decide whether it will rupture. Various biomechanical models are now developed to assess that. However they all suffer from unknown fatigue properties of the arterial wall. Therefore the secondary aim of this project is to exploit the experimental model do estimate low cycle fatigue properties of both healthy and diseased arterial walls
