Summary
Copper-based composites reinforced with ceramic phases such as Al2O3 (cermets) are of significant interest due to their combination of high electrical and thermal conductivity with improved mechanical strength and wear resistance. One of the key challenges in these materials is controlling the interfacial reactions between the metallic matrix and the ceramic reinforcement, as well as achieving a homogeneous distribution of the reinforcing phase. In the proposed research,
Cu–Al2O3 composite material will be initially manufactured using a casting route. This processing step may lead to the formation of various phases at the metal–ceramic interface, including possible reaction products such as spinel-type phases (e.g., CuAl2O4), depending on the processing conditions.
Subsequently, the material will be subjected to Severe Plastic Deformation using ECAP (Equal Channel Angular Pressing) or its modified variant TECAP. Severe plastic deformation is expected to significantly refine the microstructure, improve the dispersion of the ceramic phase, and modify the crystallographic texture of the copper matrix. Additionally, it may affect the stability of interfacial phases, leading to fragmentation or redistribution of Al2O3 particles. The main objective of the proposed research is to analyse the evolution of the microstructure, phase composition, crystallographic texture, and mechanical properties of Cu–Al2O3 cermet subjected to combined processing routes (casting + SPD).
The ECAP/TECAP process will be conducted under varying parameters (e.g. number of passes, route type, imposed strain), allowing a systematic study of their influence on grain refinement, phase stability, and mechanical performance.
The expected results of the project include a deeper understanding of the relationship between processing conditions, interfacial reactions, microstructure evolution, and mechanical properties in Cu–Al2O3 cermets. The results will contribute to the development of advanced copper-based composites with tailored properties.
